Development is a central imperative in today’s globalized world. But achieving sustainable all-round development for society requires certain fundamental pillars in place. Education is one such pillar without which any future growth is inconceivable. To imagine growth with large parts of the country bounded in illiteracy is just impossible. More so, in today’s information based society, where education is the key to a whole world of opportunities. Not only that, a whole host of issues in fields of healthcare, economic opportunity, women empowerment and community building can be traced to a lack of proper education.
Although India ranks a low fourth in South Asia in terms of both adult literacy rate and youth/child literacy, several achievements have been recorded in the field of education since independence, according to government data. The average literacy rate was 65% in 2001 (up from 18% in 1951). The number of uneducated persons declined for the first time since Census 1951 by almost 32 million in absolute terms between 1991 and 2001.
But the improvements pale when you consider that every third illiterate person in the world is an Indian. Of approximately 200 million children in the 6-14 age-group, only 120 million are enrolled in school. "Inadequate budget allocation, dismal school infrastructure in rural areas, high dropout rates, are the hallmarks of our education system”. Even the minimal infrastructure, such as proper rooms, desks, drinking water facility, toilets, is missing in a large number of schools.
Vision 2016 stresses on primary and secondary level to improve education, because primary and secondary level prepares ground for higher education which needs worthy and deserving aspirants. Thanks to our supporters and well wishers due to whom Vision 2016 implements wide ranging Educational Projects, being executed round half (north) the country. The sector proposes a multi facet plan for the development of education system among the marginalised sections of the Indian society. For the purpose to fulfill the plan, Vision 2016 provides funds for delivering quality education to primary and secondary level schools.
The Vision 2016 has taken up following projects in the field of Education for the year 2009-2010:
- Establishment of Primary Schools
- Capacity Building and Improvement of Existing Schools
- Loan Scholarships
Establishment of Primary Schools
The Vision 2016 proposes to establish 100 primary schools in Northern part of the country by March 2011. We are very close to achieving our target of establishing 16 new primary schools by March 2010. Your contributions have enabled us sanction 11 schools by now; 6 in UP, 2 in Madhya Pradesh, and 1 each in West Bengal, Assam and Gujarat. The amount sanctioned for each school is Rs. 5,00,000, hence a total of Rupees 5.5 millions. These schools are scheduled to start from the next academic year.
Six more places have been identified for establishing primary schools and sanctioning is expected by March 2010.
Vision proposes an additional 84 Primary Schools till March 2011.
Capacity Building and Improvement of Existing Schools
There are a number of Schools across the country which are run by the socially concerned persons with little or no resources. In most of the cases they are even short of necessary infrastructure. These schools having good potential need some intervention to develop their infrastructure and to overcome their shortcomings.
Vision 2016 offers Rs. 10,00,000 per school to enhance the capacity of these schools. Our field co-ordinators have identified 12 such schools that need immediate intervention. Four of them have already been sanctioned the amount and the remaining will be sanctioned by the end of this financial year.
Establishment of Vocational Technical Schools
With the changing economic scenario and global competitiveness there is a yawning mismatch between the skilled manpower required and skilled manpower available. Every year we churn out millions of graduates who do not have the specific skill sets required by the market. The most pressing need of the hour is to create a pool of qualified and knowledgeable skills to narrow the gap between demand and supply of skilled manpower.
In backdrop of this, Vision 2016 program has set a target of establishing 5 Vocational Technical Schools by March 2010. By the grace of Almighty one technical school is already in operation, two more are under construction and the rest is expected to be sanctioned by March 2010.
Establishment of Hostels
Hostel is an indispensable element of education system in a country like India with large population but inadequate facilities of education within a comfortable distance. In most of the cases, specially in rural India, the schools are at distant places. Many girls fear walking long distances to schools because of the dangers it exposes them to specially in rural and isolated areas.
Keeping this in view, the Vision 2016 has planned to establish ten Hostels in different parts of the country.
Recently, a girls’ hostel is established in Dholahat, South 24 Parganas, West Bengal. A total number of 105 girls are availing the facility of this hostel.
Extension of an existing girls’ hostel (Maulana Azad Girls' Hostel) at Howly, Assam is going on. This hostel is home to 88 girls at the moment.
Scholarships for Higher Education
Our Scholarship Programme is launched with an objective to provide educational opportunities to the academically meritorious and financially needy young students to pursue undergraduate or postgraduate studies and to train them in specified fields in order to improve their social and economic conditions, preserve their cultural and religious identities and make a meaningful contribution to the development of their communities and the country.
These scholarships are given as an interest-free loan to the students. It needs to be repaid after graduation and gainful employment, in easy installments. The repaid fund will be used to provide scholarships for other deserving students to ensure its continuity in the long run.
The Vision 2016 awarded a total of 7,697 scholarships this year on the basis of need for pursuing, post matriculation, under graduate and post graduate degrees in different disciplines of Social Sciences and Humanities. The amount of scholarships ranges from Rs. 3,500 to Rs. 15,000 per annum per student depending upon the nature and standard of the course.
Awards for Academic Excellence
Scholarship is itself a catalyst for those students who are unable to access the available resources. Purpose of educational projects in Vision 2016 is to ignite and propel the students' self potential. The award distribution was a great step in a marathon. With a view to enhance the capacity, courage and zeal of education among school children, Vision 2016 started an ‘Awards for Academic Excellence’ program. The Award for Academic Excellence - 2009 (UP) was meant to encourage the students to continue performing better in future. It is to motivate the minority students for performing excellently in their academic studies. UP is the first state where Award Function was organized in Nov. 2009. Some 750 students from 46 districts, who passed the 10th standard examinations in 2009 with at least 60 % marks were felicitated. Each student was awarded with a merit certificate along with a cash prize. This award function was organized by our sister organization Human Welfare Foundation (HWF) in collaboration with P. M. Foundation, Kerala.
Apart from the students, the schools were also ranked according to their performances in last three academic sessions. Ten schools were facilitated with memento and certificates.
Budding Talents Promotion Scheme
The Vision 2016 has launched a Merit based Scholarship scheme for students who have passed the secondary school examination with good marks and are among the top 25 scorers in our Talent Search Examination. We will bear all educational expenses of these selected Students till they complete their education. They will be encouraged to pursue Research oriented courses. Currently, this project is being implemented in the state of Uttar Pradesh. It will be expanded to cover more states.
School Bag Distribution
As per the Vision-2016 program for promoting poor students to school education, School bags worth Rs. 11,00,000 were distributed in the year 2009 among 2,200 poor and needy students studying in primary and high schools. This scheme was implemented in northern states. This scheme is running since 2007 and a total of Rs. 33 lac has been spent on this account till date.
Career Guidance Centre
A Guidance and Information Centre of India (GICI) was established in Chennai under the Vision-2016 program. The centre is intended to disseminate information on educational opportunities and giving career guidance and coaching to students along with moral values. A similar centre is also established in the state of Karnataka. This project will soon be implemented in Aligarh, U. P. and Delhi.
Orphan Care Programme
